Participating in Disegno Italia was truly one of the most transformative experiences of my college career. Over four unforgettable weeks, I had the chance to live, learn, and grow in San Giovanni Valdarno and Milan while earning six credit hours toward my degree.

The first half of the program was spent in the small Tuscan town of San Giovanni Valdarno, and it honestly felt like stepping into a storybook. We lived right in the heart of town, where every day felt like a blend of history and community. Walking through ancient Roman and Etruscan ruins, visiting the Medici Gardens in Fiesole, and exploring the Renaissance masterpieces of Florence brought everything I had learned in the classroom to life. I especially loved our visit to a family run vineyard in Chianti as it gave me a whole new appreciation for Italian culture, food, and tradition.

Throughout our time in Tuscany, we each worked on a research project that explored how design is shaped by place. It pushed me to think deeper about the connection between environment, culture, and creativity which is something I’ll carry with me far beyond this trip.

The second half of the program took us to Milan, where we studied at NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti). It was incredible to shift from the historical roots of Italian art and design to the fast-paced, innovative world of Milan’s creative industry. I took visual merchandising, and had the opportunity to learn from professionals, visit studios, and create a final project that challenged and inspired me.

Disegno Italia was a full cultural and creative immersion. I came home with new skills, lasting friendships, a stronger global perspective, and a deeper love for art, design, and storytelling. If you’re thinking about going…do it!
